I’m not great at setting goals for myself. When I think of a goal I think of things that I try to accomplish, like putting the clothes away before I’ve already worn them all again out of the laundry basket. Like getting all three beds in the house made before 3:00 pm. Like actually checking everything off of a to do list before adding more. Some people might call these tasks. For personality types like mine, we know they are goals (lofty ones at that) because the chances of ever getting them done are slim to none.

So since your tasks might be considered my goals, your goals are what I call dreams. And I have had and realized a few dreams so far in my life. A huge one was opening an actual studio last August. And still, every time I unlock the door to my studio and am greeted by the gorgeous light streaming in the windows, I realize how blessed I am to be doing what I do and have a physical space to call my own.

This past month I realized another dream of mine–to officially launch my mentoring sessions available for the baby photographer. After many inquiries and conducting several mentorships I decided to officially take the plunge and announce my one on one mentoring sessions on facebook. And the response has been so encouraging–I can’t wait to meet the ladies that have signed up for their Mentor Me, Baby!™ sessions later this summer. I’ve also been so encouraged by the vendors who want to be sponsors and provide products for my goodie bags–seriously they are going to be awesome and full of items perfect for the baby photographer, including my Tea Party Action Set and newborn pocket posing guide (if you have a product and are interested in learning about becoming a sponsor, just click here for the details).

I usually love maternity sessions, but I loved this one even more because it’s my little niece in that beautiful belly! My sister in law, Carrie, is due with her first child in July and I couldn’t be more excited. When they were up last weekend for her baby shower I was able to document Carrie’s growing belly. As I was driving to the session I felt like a storm chaser or something–I was seriously watching the sun set before my eyes and was hoping that I would get there in time. But I must admit, the beautiful glowing sunset was the perfect compliment to Carrie’s natural pregnant glow. I just love these images.

I always feel blessed to be a Californian when I read about fellow photographers in the midwest that are forced to shoot indoors during the freezing, snowy months. But let me tell you, Sacramento has sure had it’s share of gloomy days lately! Despite the overcast sky and the threat of rain, today’s session with {S} rocked! No need for sun, {S} is truly glowing all on her own. {S} and I have been friends since high school and I just love our coffee dates. But today it was so fun to do something different and get out and take pictures of her adorable growing belly. Can you believe that this mama already has an almost two year old boy at home? Doesn’t she look incredible?{S}, I had a great time (as always) with you this afternoon. Though we weren’t able to get images with little {T}–I hope he feels better soon–I think we captured some awesome ones of your and your soon-to-be little one. I hope you love your sneak peek! happy new year | a contest

So it’s officially a new year. Doesn’t feel a whole lot different but it is always exciting to have a fresh start, isn’t it? I can’t wait to begin 2010 and meet all of my new clients. This past year has truly been a blessing–I have had the opportunity to meet and photograph such amazing people–I honestly can say that I have the best clients ever! Thank you everyone for making Megan Squires Photography such a success!

Before I dive into all of my 2010 sessions, I thought I would compile my nine favorite portraits from 2009. I love each of them for different reasons, but they all mean something special to me and when I look that them I still get that “Oh, I love that one!” feeling inside. But now it’s up to you to decide the favorite image of 2009.

The client whose image receives the most votes will get an 11×14 thin wrap (love these–they are new to my 2010 product catalog) from their past session or from a new ‘10 session. And for those who vote–leave a comment on the blog for a chance to win a mini session. It’s a win-win for everyone!

This holiday weekend I met up with a gorgeous mommy to be and her beautiful family in Davis. The weather was perfect–finally cooling down from the 100+ streak we’ve had and the lighting was spectacular. I had so much fun getting to know them and can’t wait to meet their new little girl in August. She’s so lucky to be part of this loving family and to have such a great big sister who will no doubt be a huge help. I just loved this bridge and had to get an image of the three of them on it. Turns out it must be a creative eye thing because my close friend and fellow photographer actually captured virtually the same image during a session she did at the arboretum that same day. I absolutely love all the green, the flowers, and the rustic feel of the bridge. Great scenery! This next image is one of my new favorites (I know I say that every session, but my clients are just so beautiful!). I love the blue background and the ground cover at their feet. And it was no small feat to get this image! We had to dodge a nesting mother duck and avoid her getting too upset with us (Dad, thanks for being such a good sport!) But it was well worth it to capture this image of Mom and Dad.When clients ask what they should wear to a session I always tell them how much I love photographing color. I really like when their outfits just pop and compliment one another. This next image is a perfect example of that. Mom’s gorgeous orange dress has just a hint of color that’s pulled out into Dad’s shirt. I love how they match, but don’t have to be wearing the same thing to coordinate.
And just because Mom is so beautiful, I had to include some of just her (and baby of course!)Mom and Dad–thank you so much for meeting me on Sunday and allowing me the opportunity to photograph this amazing time in your lives. I love when I get the news that one of my maternity clients has welcomed their precious little one into the world. It is so amazing to be able to chronicle this miracle of life and to look at their pregnancy portraits one minute and meet their amazingly beautiful bundle of joy the next. And beautiful Baby {O} certainly is. I had such a wonderful afternoon getting to know her and she was such a delight to photograph. She was so snugly and sleepy that we were able to capture some great images of her without even a peep.

This first image is just my absolute favorite. I love her curled little arms and her swoopy lips.

And what a gorgeous head of hair–I just love it! I was also so glad that Mom and Dad wanted some family images taken as well–they are such a beautiful family.
When we placed baby {O} in this bowl Mom hit the nail on the head by saying that {O} looked almost edible. I couldn’t agree more–she is so yummy in all of her baby newness. What a perfect centerpiece!

I love the look on {O’s} face in this next one with Dad. Actually, I love the looks on both of their faces. You can really tell what a proud Papa he is.

I always feel so honored when clients choose me to photograph one of the most important (and beautiful) times in their lives. I absolutely love maternity sessions and this past one was no exception. I had so much fun photographing the {P} family and seriously, can you believe mom-to-be is 38 weeks pregnant? She looks absolutely stunning! I really feel spoiled with all of my beautiful clients!
I hope you two enjoy your sneak peek. I’ll have your online gallery up for you this week! Enjoy your last two weeks of pregnancy–I can’t wait to meet your little girl!

This past Saturday I had the privilege of taking sweet baby {A’s} newborn photographs. I must say, I’ve officially caught it…the baby bug. After spending two hours with {A} I left feeling that aching for another little one. They are just so precious, so innocent, and so adorably snugly at this age. {A} was a perfect little angel for me. She slept the entire time and let us switch out bows and poses without even a flinch. She is really very comfortable in front of the camera. There’s no way she couldn’t be though. You’ll remember her gorgeous parents from this maternity shoot. The camera absolutely loves everyone in this beautiful family.

Mom–thanks for letting me spend the afternoon with your adorable little girl. I hope you love the pictures–I’ll have your online gallery up soon!
