Buzz, buzz, buzz, buzzzzz. If you could see me, I’m sure that’s the sound that you’d hear. I have been one very busy little bee this past month (hence the lack of blog posts–funny because you would expect more with so many sessions, but unfortunately my blog is the last on my to-do list). I had the privilege of photographing one of my very best friends last month with her brand new little girl. Seriously, it’s one of those “if I didn’t love her so much I would hate her” things. Who looks that amazing five days after giving birth? I’ll tell you who, my dear friend Rebekah. I loved every image from this session and this is just a small peek at some of the amazing shots we got.

I’ve wanted to do a shoot in the rain for quite a while, but one thing always stopped me from actually doing it.

The rain.

Because as much as I loved the idea of a rain soaked session, my slippers, coffee mug, and blanket kept convincing me to stay inside.

Then a few months ago I began writing a workshop for ClickinMoms that really pushed me to step out of my creative comfort zone and embrace the elements. I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed stretching myself. Photographing in conditions that you’re not used to–whether it be in a torrential downpour or in the full midday sun–is such a great way to keep yourself on top of your photography game, so to speak.

It’s easy for me to photograph babies is my toasty studio. And I love every minute of it. Do I love every minute of standing in the cold, the wind and rain on my face and in my camera? No, not as much. But though the processes might be different in comfort, the end result is the same. I simply adore these images. And when I look at them, I still get the warm, fuzzy feeling that I have from all the other sessions I do–even if the actual shoot wasn’t quite as warm as I’m accustomed to.

It seems as though I was just tying up bows and wrapping packages to set under the recently decorated tree and now the blossoms are hanging on the trees outside and I’m pulling my spring clothes out of the back of the closet. I know it must mean I’m getting older, this blending of months and seasons and years into one big rush of time, and I know I’m not alone in saying “where has this year gone?” It’s April already and that means graduation is just around the corner. I only have a few spots left for graduating seniors, so if you haven’t had your portraits taken yet, please contact me soon. Here are just a few favorites from Lindsay’s session last winter.

You know how when life gets busy you just let some things slide? We all have a list of things that we let go, put on back burner and block out of our minds. During my recent season of busyness I’ve found that I have three main things that fall by the wayside.

1. Grocery shopping

2. Laundry

3. Updating the blog

The problem for me is that the top two reasons come with little reminders that they need to be completed. Those reminders are growling tummies and empty sock drawers. The blog, on the other hand, just sits there content. It doesn’t complain that I haven’t given it any attention. It doesn’t demand that I update it. It doesn’t remind me that it’s been over a month since I’ve logged in to post some of my recent work. It just sits there patiently, waiting for the day that I’ll remember it and give it some much needed TLC.

Well, today is your day, blog. It’s not for lack of beautiful babies, gorgeous families, or stunning seniors though. I have a whole folder of sessions just waiting to be shared. But it is for lack of prompting on the blog’s part–if my blog would just email me with a note saying something along the lines of “Hey, I miss you. Want to spend some time updating today?” I’d probably be much more likely to give it some attention. But for now my little one’s voices are louder than the voice in my head reminding me to post, and the empty fridge and overflowing laundry baskets are much more visible.

I am so excited to be a part of a group of 12 fantastic photographers from Clickinmoms taking on the challenge this year to document the way we view things. For each month we will have a different theme that we will photograph throughout the month and post at the beginning of the next.

January’s theme…”the way I view new beginnings.”

As a newborn photographer, I feel so blessed to be able to experience new beginnings on a daily basis. Each time a family walks into my studio with their little one in their arms, I see the beginning of so many things for them. New life, new love, new hopes and dreams. It really is the beginning of so many new experiences, joys, frustrations, and challenges, but it all starts with this new little life.

Our family’s newest beginning is my sweet little niece, Hannah. Something about a brand new baby makes everything seem right in the world–a perfect new beginning.

How many new moms can say that they took a mentoring session and brought their own 9-day old baby to model for it? I’m always so impressed when clients are able to come to my studio during those first few days of their little one’s life, let alone drive all the way from Berkley and shoot right alongside me all day long! Elicia is a rockstar and we had a wonderful time photographing her little bundle of joy.

I think I let out a squeal when this adorable little guy came into the studio back in the beginning of December. That hair! And take a look at those lashes. This sweetie was just as cooperative as he was adorable and proved to be the perfect model for the newborn portion of my Mentor Me, Baby! mentoring session.

What a fantastic year to be born. In all I photographed 40 precious, new little lives. Feeling so blessed to have been a part of their first few days. I can’t believe some of them are just about to turn one already!
