So I’ve discovered the result to burning the candle at both ends (and it’s not pretty, let me tell you). Picture a very congested, cranky, and sneezy Megan and you’ve got an idea of what my week has looked like. After I finished up photographing this adorable family I went home only to head to bed early with a stuffy nose and cough. Luckily I didn’t have any other sessions scheduled until last night, but the much needed rest and early bedtime has put me behind in my sneak-peeking, editing, and ordering. So I got out my trusty to-do list and have created a very thorough, detailed plan to get everything finished up in a quite timely matter if I do say so myself.

And at the top of that list was getting the “sneak peek” together for the {T} family. My favorite part about this session was how snuggly they all are. You really can just see the love they have for one another–it comes through so clearly in all of the images I took. I always have to remind my clients to scoot closer together–that it might feel awkward but I promise it looks better in pictures than to have one foot gaps in between each person. But I didn’t have to tell the {T} family that once. I just love the closeness they share and think these images reflect that perfectly.

If you look up “cutie pie” in the dictionary (that is, if it were an actual word that was really in the dictionary), I’m sure you’d find these images of six month old {E}. That’s exactly the phrase that comes to mind when I think of this sweet little girl. Those chubby arms and legs, those big brown eyes, and those tiny, adorable two teeth. Cutie pie.

Mom–I had a great time hanging out with you and {E} yesterday. You both were so much fun to be around and are the reason why I love my job. I hope you love your sneak peek of your little cutie pie.

I held my mini valentine sessions this past Saturday and had such a great time with all of the kids that came out. There was another break in the storm so we had some beautiful natural light to work with. Here are just a few of the cuties from the mini sessions–more to come in another post.

Another gloomy Sacramento day. If it’s going to rain outside, you might as well look good while playing in it (even if your boots are on the wrong feet)!And would you believe me if I told you that we’re up to 607 votes for the Best of 2009 contest? I seriously cannot believe how this has taken off! My poor blog has been like the Little Engine that Could, “I think I can, I think I can.” I apologize to anyone who had problems loading the pages yesterday–the site has been experiencing some major traffic as everyone casts their votes. We have a princess living in our house…and she’s two and a half years old. When I was pregnant with Abby I had dreams of ruffles, pink and all things girly. Well, little Abby is all of this and more. She adores having her hair done, wearing her Ariel lipgloss, and lately, dressing up in tutus. My children are both at the age where they are able to dress themselves and every so often I ask them to pick out their own clothes for the day. Jacob usually comes downstairs with rain boots, shorts, and a mismatched shirt, but Abby is always dressed to the nines. This girl has a great sense of style and since I adore photographing color, I knew I had to snap an image of this awesome outfit. And on a side note, would you believe me if I told you that our little Best of 2009 contest is now up to 305 votes? Keep spreading the word–you’ve got one more week to vote!

So I must say, I am astounded at the amount of votes that the Best of 2009 contest has generated so far! We’re only a few days into it and we’re already up to 173 votes and counting! It’s a close match with the top three within 18 votes of each other. So make your pick if you haven’t yet and remember to spread the word since you can only vote once!

And definitely don’t forget to leave a comment here after you vote for your chance to win a mini photography session. With only 12 comments now, you’ve got pretty good odds! I know you’re out there, so leave me some blog love! I adore feedback and communication and would love to know who is reading this little ol’ blog of mine! So jot me a quick note and let me know who you are.

I’ve got several sessions coming up that I can’t wait for, but today I tried to snap a few pictures of my own children. That’s definitely a New Year’s resolution of mine–to remember to photograph my own kids. It seems silly, being a children’s photographer and all, that it would slip my mind to capture images of my Abby and Jacob. But trust me, it’s harder than you think. It’s also difficult (as any professional photographer with kids would tell you) to get natural looking pictures of my very unwilling children. My kids run every time the see the camera. Seriously…run! Or scream at me, shake their finger, or collapse into a puddle on the floor. You may think I’m being dramatic, but believe me–it’s not a pretty sight. And I do feel for them. Honestly, I do. They have been subjected to numerous lens testings, backdrop try outs, and countless “just one more!” pleadings from me.

So when it appears that I might, just possibly, have a willing subject, I bust out that Nikon faster than you can say “cheese!” (which you will never, ever hear me say at a session, by the way. Saying cheese is a surefire way to get forced and strained looking pictures of your little ones. If you have to say something to coax a smile out of them, opt for “candy” or something that produces a somewhat more natural grin). Jacob was a good sport and even offered a smile or two for me without any pleading, begging, or bribing on my end. So I’m quite pleased with the resulting image of my little man.

This past session has to be one of my new favorites. Mom and I were watching the weather all day and even though it was starting to sprinkle, I figured we would be okay. I’m so glad we kept the appointment because little {J} truly rocked this session. Full of smiles from the minute he stepped out of the car, he made my job so easy. And this boy definitely loves his mama. I was actually a little jealous at all of the snuggly images we got. I so wish I had some of Jacob and I like this but my little man has never been one to sit still long enough to cuddle.
Mom–thank you so much for meeting up with me this week (even in the cold, wet, rain!) I hope you enjoy your sneak peek! I’ll have your gallery up and ready for you very soon!

happy new year | a contest

So it’s officially a new year. Doesn’t feel a whole lot different but it is always exciting to have a fresh start, isn’t it? I can’t wait to begin 2010 and meet all of my new clients. This past year has truly been a blessing–I have had the opportunity to meet and photograph such amazing people–I honestly can say that I have the best clients ever! Thank you everyone for making Megan Squires Photography such a success!

Before I dive into all of my 2010 sessions, I thought I would compile my nine favorite portraits from 2009. I love each of them for different reasons, but they all mean something special to me and when I look that them I still get that “Oh, I love that one!” feeling inside. But now it’s up to you to decide the favorite image of 2009.

The client whose image receives the most votes will get an 11×14 thin wrap (love these–they are new to my 2010 product catalog) from their past session or from a new ‘10 session. And for those who vote–leave a comment on the blog for a chance to win a mini session. It’s a win-win for everyone!

I’ve been absent from the blog for a while, but that’s been intentional. See, behind the scenes I’ve been quite a busy bee. Getting lots of things ready for my business for the new year. Just wait…it’s going to be awesome. I promise. In fact I can hardly wait. But I set January 1st as my unveiling, so we’ll all have to wait just a bit longer.

But there is one thing that really couldn’t wait, so I had to pop on the blog one last time for 2009. This time of year gets so busy with shopping, wrapping, visiting friends and family, eating (and eating, and eating) and spreading holiday cheer. All good things. Most of them great things. But in the middle of all the busyness it might be easy to overlook the greatest thing of all. That on that night many, many years ago God came down to dwell with humanity in the form of a tiny little baby, wrapped in cloths and placed in a manger. The greatest promise given to man, that we might have eternal life through the gift of Jesus. This is the reason I celebrate.

I wish you all a very, merry Christmas. I thank each one of you for being a part of my life this past year–see you all in 2010!
