I’m in love | sacramento area newborn photographer

So this is what six days looks like. So fresh, so new, and so adorably snuggly. This little one is by far the most sleepy, cooperative, and precious newborn that I have photographed to date. And I’m not biased at all since he’s my brand new nephew. I cannot describe how much I love little {H}. I think the love that you have as an aunt is probably as close to the love you have for your own children as you can get (I know some grandmas out there are about to argue with me, but I honestly believe it.)

And I think it must mean even more when it’s the child of your one and only big sister. There is a special bond between sisters no doubt. I know that I wouldn’t be where I am today without my big sis. She is the one who shares all of the same childhood memories. She is the one who was there when I gave birth to both of my children and encouraged me, telling me that I could do it when I felt like I couldn’t. She is the one who was there with me at my Dad’s beside when he took his last breathe. And she is the one who knows what it’s like to try to create a life other than the one you had imagined when you lose your Daddy to cancer. She’s the one that understands the joys, the tears, and the beauty of motherhood. She’s my sister and I’m so grateful God gave her to me.

And I just adore the two beautiful boys that she and my brother in law have created. I feel so blessed to live just a mile from them and that to get to watch my nephews grow up.  And I feel so honored that I got to take little {H’s} newborn pictures–he’s such a beautiful little guy and the perfect little model. He didn’t even make a peep the whole time–what a trooper!Blog2Blog3bBlog1d

happy new year | a contest

So it’s officially a new year. Doesn’t feel a whole lot different but it is always exciting to have a fresh start, isn’t it? I can’t wait to begin 2010 and meet all of my new clients. This past year has truly been a blessing–I have had the opportunity to meet and photograph such amazing people–I honestly can say that I have the best clients ever! Thank you everyone for making Megan Squires Photography such a success!

Before I dive into all of my 2010 sessions, I thought I would compile my nine favorite portraits from 2009. I love each of them for different reasons, but they all mean something special to me and when I look that them I still get that “Oh, I love that one!” feeling inside. But now it’s up to you to decide the favorite image of 2009.

The client whose image receives the most votes will get an 11×14 thin wrap (love these–they are new to my 2010 product catalog) from their past session or from a new ‘10 session. And for those who vote–leave a comment on the blog for a chance to win a mini session. It’s a win-win for everyone!

To vote simply scroll through the images at the bottom of the post, select your favorite and then click “VOTE”. If you want to view the images in a larger format, just click on the image. Also, click on the share this button to link the contest to your favorite social networking sites. Easy as pie.

So go ahead, spread the word and cast your vote! I can’t wait to see which image is chosen as the 2009 favorite! (Voting ends at midnight on January 15th.)

{Poll is officially closed–Thank you all for voting!}

Merry Christmas! | sacramento family photographer

I’ve been absent from the blog for a while, but that’s been intentional. See, behind the scenes I’ve been quite a busy bee. Getting lots of things ready for my business for the new year. Just wait…it’s going to be awesome. I promise. In fact I can hardly wait. But I set January 1st as my unveiling, so we’ll all have to wait just a bit longer.

But there is one thing that really couldn’t wait, so I had to pop on the blog one last time for 2009. This time of year gets so busy with shopping, wrapping, visiting friends and family, eating (and eating, and eating) and spreading holiday cheer. All good things. Most of them great things. But in the middle of all the busyness it might be easy to overlook the greatest thing of all. That on that night many, many years ago God came down to dwell with humanity in the form of a tiny little baby, wrapped in cloths and placed in a manger. The greatest promise given to man, that we might have eternal life through the gift of Jesus. This is the reason I celebrate.

I wish you all a very, merry Christmas. I thank each one of you for being a part of my life this past year–see you all in 2010!

giving is awesome | sacramento photographer

givingisawesome900x100This holiday season I’m so excited to be a part of something greater than myself–a group of photographers coming together to give back to their communities. In 2008, photographers worldwide donated $565,000 worth of photography to deserving families who could otherwise not afford their services. This year the goal is to donate $1,000,000 and I can’t wait to help them meet that goal.

This is where I need your help.

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would truly cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography — $1,000 worth, to be exact. A complimentary session, digital files of their images, as well as a custom image box filled with 5×7 prints of each image. What a great gift to give. And it’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a complimentary photography session. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

The rules:

* You cannot nominate yourself and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-vacation-home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

* The nominee must reside within 60 miles of the Sacramento area. Tell me who you know, what they’re experiencing, and why they deserve my artwork. Please include a way to contact both your nominee and yourself as well.

* You must e-mail me the full story: megan@megansquires.com by Friday, December 18th.

The winner will be announced on Christmas Eve so spread the word and get your nominations in! I can’t wait to read all of your entries! Open your heart to someone this holiday season — and thanks for giving me the opportunity to open mine.

And because a post isn’t a post without a picture, here is one of my greatest gifts–my precious four year old, Jacob.blog-19

angelic | folsom newborn photographer

There is nothing more peaceful than a sleeping baby. A few days back I had the joy of meeting little miss {M} and her adoring family. She was so peaceful, so adorably pink, and so sleepy for me. At first we weren’t sure if we were going to get that deep, snuggly sleep that we as photographers love so much. But then the heavy eyelids arrived and I knew it was a matter of time. In fact, she is my first newborn that has actually fallen asleep on my blankets on her own without any cuddling or snacking. She just drifted off into an angelic little slumber.
