baby as art | folsom newborn photographer

This first image sums up exactly how last week’s Baby as Art workshop with Carrie Sandoval and Brittany Woodall made me feel–like I was dreaming. Newborn photography is truly such an art and these two gals have it mastered. I still am so in awe of the fact that I was able to learn from the best of the best in the industry and feel like I should pinch myself and wake up! What an invaluable experience to be able to witness firsthand their attention to detail, their calming way with brand new babies, and their overall vision for their images.

There were two baby models during our personal workshop, so here are a few images I took of the first little beauty. There really is nothing quite like a sleeping newborn baby.

She was technically my last shoot of the year and the very first baby to sleep through an entire session. I typically plan for two to three setups during a newborn session, but with this little snoozer we were able to go from one pose to the next with not so much as a peep. And I’ve never been able to use a new prop so quickly–usually I buy it and sit on it for weeks until the perfect session comes along. But last week when I stumbled across this gorgeous wooden bucket I hoped and hoped that my upcoming newborn session would be with a good sleeper so we would be able to capture some great images using it. Mission accomplished.

natural glow | sacramento maternity photographer

I usually love maternity sessions, but I loved this one even more because it’s my little niece in that beautiful belly! My sister in law, Carrie, is due with her first child in July and I couldn’t be more excited. When they were up last weekend for her baby shower I was able to document Carrie’s growing belly. As I was driving to the session I felt like a storm chaser or something–I was seriously watching the sun set before my eyes and was hoping that I would get there in time. But I must admit, the beautiful glowing sunset was the perfect compliment to Carrie’s natural pregnant glow. I just love these images.

worth the wait | folsom newborn photographer

I’m sure that Mom would agree that this little cutie was worth the wait. When I contacted her to touch base regarding our upcoming newborn session, she mentioned that she was still pregnant–that {C} was just too cozy and wasn’t quite ready to make his debut. When I arrived for the photoshoot {C} was a wide eyed, alert ten day old boy. But after an hour of my warm space heater, sound machine, and a few snacks, he eventually gave in. And once again, he proved that it was definitely worth the wait! Nothing could wake this little guy from his slumber and I’m so glad. He gave us some great poses and adorable sleepy smiles.

six weeks | folsom newborn photographer

Alright. I’m going to admit something, but you can’t tell anyone, okay?

I get nervous.

Whew. I feel much better now that that’s out there.

But seriously, I do. I get nervous. I still get nervous before every photography session.

But I look at that as a good sign. I get nervous because I know how important the images I’m about to take are. They will represent one second in time that can never be duplicated. They will hang on someone’s wall. They will become works of art.

And for today’s session I was a bit more nervous than usual. When Mom contacted me to take pictures of her six week old little guy we knew {C} was on the older side for newborn images. We talked over the details, knowing that we would have to work hard to get those sleepy, snuggly images. Well, turns out we hardly had to work at all. {C} was the perfect little model. He was still and alert and made great eye contact for all of his awake images. And usually for newborns we need to feed, snuggle, burp (and then feed some more) to lull them into dreamland. Not so for {C}. He fell alseep all on his own in my green bucket of all places! It was truly hysterical–we placed him in the bucket and then watched as his eyelids got heavier and heavier until he was out like a light.

So once again my nerves were for nothing since {C} was a champ and our session was awesome. Here are a few of my favorites.
